The stockpile Schurenbach is a circa 45 metres high former overburden damp of the coal mine in�Essen's district�Altenessen. the stockpile is situated directly at the Rhine-Herne-Canal, near the� Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen.
The stockpile was used until its closure in by the pit Zollverein for the storage of mining waste. After that other coal pits used the stockpile until the mid-nineties. Then the stockpile was re-naturalised and converted into�a landscape monument.
A 15m high slab by the American artist Richard Serra has been placed on the stockpile's crown in 1998 as a landmark.�The stockpile� Schurenbach is part of the industry culture route
